Letter to ESPN

Below is the text of an e-mail sent to ESPN’s Ombudsman, Le Anne Schreiber. The only modifications I have made to this letter are the enabling of the hotlinks in place of the actual URL’s that I sent her..

Le Anne,

With the Rockies advancing to the world series perhaps you would like to revisit ESPN’s coverage of one of the events that enabled Colorado to advance.

I’m speaking about Matt Holliday’s slide into home plate for which the replays were described on ESPN as being “inconclusive.”

There is an article on my blog that sums up my position on this issue:

The main premise is that ESPN showed only cursory replays of Holliday’s slide that did not include the best angles, in fact the reverse angle replay was never shown, and the shots that were used were heavily cropped. The cropping issue alone is significant since they are commenting on if Holliday touched the plate, yet they cropped out the very plate in question!

I think it is worth examining if ESPN put forth its best, or even reasonable, effort in examining Holliday’s slide before pronouncing its judgment that the replays were inconclusive, or if ESPN took shortcuts and abandoned all due diligence in this area. And, if a suitable examination of all footage available did not take place, then ESPN compounded the error by claiming the replays were “inconclusive” which would seem to indicate that a thorough analysis of the play was in fact undertaken.

Obviously I have a strong opinion on this matter but I feel the facts do support my conclusions. Thanks in advance for checking into it yourself, and if you have the time I would like to know your thoughts on the issues I have raised. Please feel free to contact me for any clarifications you may require.

Respectfully,

Admin

After submission the following message was displayed,

Thank you for your submission.

Due to the volume of correspondence, the Ombudsman will not be able to respond to individual messages, but all comments will be considered for future columns.

So at least I know they got it and I hope that the matter gets serious consideration.
